Steven Guthrie 1999-08-08
Anchorage Daily News Tuesday, August 10, 1999 The Seward Highway was closed for
an hour Saturday afternoon after a California man bicycling with friends suffered
a heart attack and collapsed, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.
Steven Guthrie, 52, of Livermore, was later pronounced dead at Providence Alaska
Medical Center, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said. Guthrie had been trailing
two friends as they rode south near Girdwood at 2:50 p.m., trooper Sgt. Lee Oly
said. One friend looked back and saw Guthrie on the ground.
Troopers were first told Guthrie had been hit by a vehicle, and several ambulances
responded within minutes, Oly said. A LifeFlight helicopter landed in the middle
of the roadway and took Guthrie to Providence. Guthrie's friends said he had been
pale and feeling weak and lagging behind them all day. Daily News staff reports
